Due to material availability, material costs and theoretical specific energy density, rechargeable alkaline zinc manganese dioxide battery systems (ZMB) are a promising alternative to lithium-ion battery solutions. ORRCABATT will demonstrate the benefits of using alkaline Zn-MnO2 batteries in electric vehicle charging infrastructure and other stationary power storage applications over Li batteries. To this end, the cell design of the zinc-manganese energy storage device will be transferred from the laboratory scale to the industrial scale. Using the method of life cycle assessment, the project will identify suitable materials and develop tailor-made recycling routes. The holistic approach will enable a comprehensive assessment of environmental impact right from the start and tailored recycling in the future.
