Soil exploration, stress distribution in the soil, settlement calculation, shear strength of soils, shallow foundations, stability analyses of foundations, slope and ground failure, retaining walls, earth and water pressure, mechanical effect of water in the soil, consolidation theory, numerical analysis in geotechnical engineering
Hydraulic ground failure, drainage systems, excavation pits, ground anchors, types of retaining structures, design and calculation of piles, load-bearing capacity of piles and pile grids, deep foundations, soil improvement and injections
Students first acquire general soil mechanical basics, in particular knowledge about the description and determination of the mechanical properties of soil. The calculation of stresses and deformations as well as the different fracture states of soil, taking into account the structural properties, are further key aspects of the course. After successfully completing the module, students will be able to design simple foundation structures and calculate excavation pits. Building on the basics, the mechanical effect of water in the soil and various methods for deep foundations are taught.
