On 26 September 2024, we from the Alumni & Career Services and some alumni*ae attended the exciting film event in the test hall of the IFL - Institute of Aircraft Design and Lightweight Structures, which is otherwise not open to the public. Our team member Melanie Schaller reports and shares 3 learnings from the event with you today:
1. the combination of science and art works! The film event served as the kick-off event for the Science & Art Lab, which was founded in 2024 and aims to enable different approaches to research questions and an exchange between science, art and society. Initial ideas and questions were exchanged in intensive discussions during the event over chips and popcorn.
2. sustainability: Research into flying at TU Braunschweig has been working hard for years to find successful solutions to the environmental consequences of flying, which have been criticised in the arts and society. In addition to a wide range of solutions, research is currently also being carried out into the extent to which flying slower and lower can reduce emissions without making flying too jerky for passengers.
3. Together with DLR, TU Braunschweig is able to get helicopters and the HELiPOD helicopter-borne trailing probe (image left) ready for use spontaneously and thus in a very short time, for example to measure methane concentrations at sites. Among other things, it was used for the NorthStream leaks in October 2022. Incidentally, the HELiPOD has already flown over polar bears at the North Pole and camels in the Sahara.
Other highlights included the oldest film recording of an aircraft, getting to know many exciting personalities and the truffle mayo from the chip stand.
Many thanks for the exciting insights and the great organisation of the event to all the organisers and participants - especially to Henrike Wenzel and Jule Hillgaertner!
