Westland’s Glass City is the epicenter of the Netherland’s horticultural production and home to the nation’s largest greenhouse horticulture cluster. Shifts in production processes and technological transformations were mirrored here in successive expansions of greenhouses.
This resulted in an unprecedented productive cluster that conditions both the spatial character and social dynamics of Westland. Due to international competition, high labor costs, reliance on non-renewable resources, and technological shifts, Westland now faces environmental, socio-economic and spatial challenges.
This master’s thesis asks you to explore transformative solutions that integrate and synthesize horticultural production with residential and recreational premises. We ask for multi-scalar approaches and multi-functional prototypes, which preserve Westland’s horticultural industry while forging a symbiosis between living, working, and recreation.
What kind of visions, strategies and interventions can you devise for the sustainable urban development of Westland?
