2022 TransTiP & TPE Science & Technology Training

Our first hybrid summer school was held July 11 to 22 in Waldachtal, in the Black Forest in Germany, together with KCRE in Kathmandu and ITP in Beijing, China.

In 2022, we hosted our first hybrid summer school. Participants from Germany met in Wladachtal, in the Black Forest, participants from China and Nepal attended online. The TransTiP & TPE Science & Technology Training was again organized jointly by TransTiP, TPE, CAS, KCRE and CSTP. In total, this summer school attracted 57 ECS from Bangladesh, China, Colombia, Germany, India, Iran, Mexico, Nepal and Pakistan.

The training focused on mountain environments under global climate change. National and international experts gave talks on various topics in geosciences, environmental humanities and Limnology:
Antje Schwalb: Earth under climate change - a long-term perspective
Carlos Sierra: The global carbon cycle
Michael Pester: An introduction to microbial diversity in nature
Celine Bonfils: Human and natural influences on the joint changes in temperature, rainfall and aridity
Wengang Kang: Human and natural influences on climate causing unprecedented changes in lake ecosystem of the Third Pole
Carina Hoorn: Changes in forest composition in Central Asia during the Paleogene following global climate change
Deepak Aryal: Impact of Climate Change on Mountain Environment
Eryuan Liang: Inferring from Dendroecology: Biotic and Abiotic Drivers of Alpine Treeline and Shrubline Structure and Processes
Katharina Dulias: Using ancient DNA to understand the past

In addition, Torsten Sachs presented insights into the largest research expedition to the Central Arctic, the MOSAiC Expedition.

Another focus of the summer school was on Graphic Design for Geoscientists trained by Dorothee Post.

For the on-site participants in Germany, some excusions were organized. Together with Matthias Hinderer, Darmstadt University, we hiked throgh the northern Black Forest to hear about long-term human impact in a remote area. Led by Felix Martin Hofmann, Freiburg University, we climbed the highest peak of the Black Forest, the Feldberg, to learn about the glaciation history of the Black Forest. And led by Antje Schwalb, we hiked the Wutach Gorge, which is famous for geological strata, as well as its plant- and animal variety.
