Content:
Aviation industry is facing several challenges in the upcoming years. For example, large efforts must be spent to reduce climate impact of aviation and to make aviation more sustainable in general. Several contradictory objectives have to be fulfilled, like reduction of
fuel burn or noise (just to name two). There are multiple optimization strategies to address such sustainability goals.
The Institut für Flugführung (IFF) is tackling these challenges from an operational point of view, which is complementary to the strong effort that is taken on aircraft and aircraft system level to reduce the environmental footprint. The IFF is working on processes like trajectory management or fleet planning optimization to minimize the environmental impact of aviation. A holistic view on the Air Traffic System with its large magnitude of complex dependencies will help to find better and more sustainable solutions compared to nowadays air traffic operation.
In a long-standing partnership with a global industrial player, the IFF is looking for PhD candidates that will work in a collaborative working environment with colleagues at university as well as in industry. The overarching objective is to work on scientific ideas and approaches (e.g. on noise assessments of aircraft trajectories and their influence on fleet operations), which will be included into the product portfolio of the industrial partner later on.
The Institut für Flugführung is therefore looking for candidates who are interested to work in industry-funded projects. We are looking especially for candidates who will participate on Air Traffic Management (ATM) related research projects with a strong focus on sustainability aspects of aviation.
All candidates will have the opportunity to write a PhD thesis and to make relevant work in their field of research. The coordination and support of bachelor and master students will also be part of the job.
The following requirements, experiences and qualifications would be helpful:
- Successfully completed education in one of the following areas: air- and space sciences, civil engineering, electrical engineering, computer sciences.
- Experience with C/C++ programming or other programming languages are desirable but not mandatory.
- Knowledge about aviation processes (e.g. operational processes) are desirable but also not mandatory.
Application Process:
Applications should be sent by e-mail to t.feuerle(at)tu-braunschweig.de or by regular post to Institut für Flugführung, TU Braunschweig, Hermann-Blenk-Str. 27, 38108 Braunschweig and must contain the following documents:
- Motivation Letter
- Curriculum Vitae including complete address, phone number, email address, educational background, language skills, and work experience
- Copies of bachelor and master diploma and transcript of grades in original language and in English or German translation
Additional Documents must be provided on request. All documents should be in PDF format, preferably in a single file. Personal data and
documents relating to the application process will be stored electronically.
Please note that application costs cannot be refunded. For the purpose of carrying out the application process, personal data will be stored.
