The students acquire in-depth knowledge of the theoretical background for the hydraulic calculation of surface waters and groundwater flows. With this knowledge, they can understand the boundary conditions, assumptions and simplifications underlying the numerical modelling of flows and decide which methods/models are suitable or necessary to address a problem. In practical applications, the students are introduced to different numerical programmes, with special emphasis on the critical discussion of the results. At the end of the module, the students are able to compile the necessary information for a given flow problem, select the appropriate programme and analyse and interpret the results.
Content:
General: model concepts, principles of numerical solution, location, time discretisation; practical introduction to different computational methods.
