Introduction to Fracture Mechanics

Course content

Aim of this course is to provide concepts for the description of fracture and other failure mechanisms in a wide range of materials, such that the load bearing capacity of structures containing flaws can be judged. To this end, the course covers phenomenological failure models, continuum damage mechanics; linear, elasto-plastic and visco-elastic fracture mechanics as well as fatigue. Theory is accompanied by software implementation of selected models and a lab experiment.
