In this course students will learn the fundamentals of numerical optimization and its application to engineering problems. They also will get familiar with multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) techniques and the methods for formulating a design problem as an MDO. There will be practical tutorials to give the students hands-on experience to solve MDO problem. Design parametrization techniques, design structure matrix, numerical optimization methods, unconstrained and constrained optimization, sensitivity analysis methods, gradient free optimization methods, MDO architectures, multi-objective optimization, approximation methods in MDO, introduction to structural optimization, introduction to aerodynamic shape optimization, introduction to aerostructural optimization.
