The lecture will deal with the mobility topic hydrogen and hydrogen as an energy carrier of the future. Participation will enable the students to outline a hydrogen cycle economy and to set objective standards for its ecological realisation in the transport sector. They will be able to name the basic properties, both physical and chemical. The students will be able to independently apply properties that relate to thermodynamics and associated calculations of kinetics, as well as efficiency calculations. In addition to the established forms of storage, the students will be able to explain and analyse the forms of future storage. The students will be able to assess the advantages and disadvantages, in particular with regard to the battery-electric drive of automobiles, and also the comparison with the combustion of hydrogen can be analysed and it can be decided which form is energetically more favourable. Extensive discussions of safety-relevant topics are described by the students and thus round off the qualification goals.
The topic of the lecture "Hydrogen as an energy carrier" deals with the element number 1 from the point of view of its physical-chemical properties. Hydrogen in itself is not a primary energy carrier - wherever it is consumed, it must initially be produced. Accordingly, a colour theory follows the detailed presentation of the ways of hydrogen production and H2 use, especially in the transport sector. Storage in gaseous, liquid and solid form is dealt with in more detail in terms of energy technology, followed by storage in mixed form. Chemical-physical storage in metal hydrides, complex metal hydrides and MOFs is taught. The power-to-gas concept is presented as a possible storage form for alternating renewable energy production and thus exemplary for the entire hydrogen cycle economy. Examples from the transport sector round off this lecture and span the arc to mobile application.
