A large number of regionally typical roof coverings of historic roofs in Lower Saxony contribute greatly to the value of the architectural monuments as evidence of our culture and history. Roofs shape the image of cities, settlements and landscapes worthy of preservation. At the same time, roofs represent a resource in terms of sustainability and the achievement of climate neutrality: "gray energy" is bound up in their material and construction, and preserving historic roofs conserves material resources.
The project aims to develop a prototype as the basis for a Lower Saxony-wide monument roof cadastre in which the roofs are mapped, their materiality and construction determined and their respective significance for the individual monument qualified. For this purpose, analytical methods of geoinformatics and criteria from research on monument preservation and building construction history are combined in an innovative way, further developed and applied to relevant monument roof landscapes in Lower Saxony.
With the development of methods and techniques for a monument roof cadastre for Lower Saxony, the project provides foundations for broad fields of research and application:
