Arabic

World language and official language of the United Nations

Arabic is the most widely spoken Semitic language and is spoken by 206 million people as a native language and by 246 million people as a second or foreign language.

The modern standard language, which derived from classical Arabic, itself considered the language of the Qur'an and poetry, is in part quite different from the numerous varieties of spoken Arabic.

On a general communication level, the modern standard language has not yet established itself as a spoken common language, despite its use by pan-Arabic news channels. Since film and television production is primarily based in Egypt, the spoken Cairo dialect is thus becoming increasingly important and therefore serves as a "middle" language between the modern standard language and the numerous dialects.

Language Tandems

Are you learning a foreign language and would like to improve your language skills?

Then sign up for our tandem programme and find a suitable tandem partner through our portal!

The principle is simple: You and your tandem partner speak your native language half of the time, your partner’s native language the rest of the time. This way you are not only learning to use the language practically in everyday life, but you also learn a lot about the other culture. Both languages are spoken equally, so you are alternately a learner and a teacher.
