French is a Romance language belonging to the Indo-European languages and is spoken by about 321 million people in over 50 countries on all continents.
French was the most important world language until the First World War and is the second language of diplomacy alongside English. For example, French is an official and lingua franca of the UN, OAS, African Union, Interpol, NATO, World Trade Organisation, WHO, UEFA, FIFA, FIA, ESA, the International Olympic Committee and, of course, the International Organisation of La Francophonie.
According to the report published in 2018 by the International Organisation of La Francophonie, more than 60 per cent of its everyday speakers live in Africa, and this figure is rising.
As France and Germany are each other's main trading partners, having a command of the French language opens up good opportunities in the national and international world of work.
Are you learning a foreign language and would like to improve your language skills?
Then sign up for our tandem programme and find a suitable tandem partner through our portal!
The principle is simple: You and your tandem partner speak your native language half of the time, your partner’s native language the rest of the time. This way you are not only learning to use the language practically in everyday life, but you also learn a lot about the other culture. Both languages are spoken equally, so you are alternately a learner and a teacher.
