FAQ

It is best if you register for the "cs-studs" e-mail distribution list. The Examinations Office for Computer Science uses this to provide information about the examination registration period and the general procedure for registering for examinations. Furthermore, important information is published on the website of the Examination Office for Computer Science. Here you will also find the examination dates for a semester, important application forms or the version of the examination regulations that applies to you.

First of all, you are subject to the General Examination Regulations (APO), which apply to all Bachelor's and Master's degree programs at TU Braunschweig. These General Examination Regulations are supplemented by the regulations set out in the Special Examination Regulations for the Bachelor's degree program in Computer Science (BPO). The Special Examination Regulations that were valid when you started your studies apply to you. If a new BPO is published during your studies, you will generally continue to study according to your previous BPO; please note the transition periods. You can apply to switch to the new BPO.

Faculty 1 has set the following new credit point (CP) limits for a positive certificate with regard to Form 5 (= proof of credit points for the BAföG office):

The following regulation applies for students starting their studies in the winter semester [valid from 31.03.2019]:

After the 3rd semester, 60 credits must be successfully passed by the student by the deadline of 31.03. and subsequently proven to the BAföG office.

The student must submit Form 5 to the Examination Office for Computer Science and have it completed. This is possible from 01.04. onwards.

The student is then obliged to collect the completed Form 5 and submit it to the BAföG office by July 31st.

If the proof is not submitted to the BaföG office by 31.07., the credits to be proven for the 4th semester will automatically apply from 01.08.!

After the 4th semester, the student must successfully complete 80 credits by the deadline of 30.09. and then provide proof of this to the BAföG office.

The student must submit Form 5 to the Examination Office for Computer Science and have it completed. This is possible from 01.10. onwards.

The student is then obliged to collect the completed Form 5 and submit it independently to the BAföG office by January 31.

If the proof is not submitted to the BaföG office by 31.01., the credits to be proven for the 5th semester will automatically apply from 01.02.!

After the 5th semester, the student must successfully complete 110 credits by the deadline of March 31 and then provide proof of this to the BAföG office.

The student must submit Form 5 to the Examination Office for Computer Science and have it completed. This is possible from 01.04. onwards.

The student is then obliged to collect Form 5 from the Examinations Office for Computer Science and submit it to the BAföG office by July 31st.

The following regulation applies to students starting in the summer semester [valid from 31.03.2019]:

After the 3rd semester, 60 credits must be successfully passed by the student by the deadline of 30.09. and subsequently proven to the BAföG office.

The student must submit form 5 to the Examination Office for Computer Science and have it completed. This is possible from 01.10. onwards.

The student is then obliged to collect Form 5 completed by the Examinations Office for Computer Science and submit it independently to the BAföG office by January 31.

If the proof is not submitted to the BaföG office by 31.01., the credits to be proven for the 4th semester will automatically apply from 01.02.!

After the 5th semester, the student must successfully complete 110 credits by the deadline of September 30th and then provide proof of this to the BAföG office.

The student must submit Form 5 to the Examination Office for Computer Science and have it completed. This is possible from 01.10. onwards.

The student is then obliged to collect Form 5 from the Examinations Office for Computer Science and submit it to the BAföG office by January 31st.

At the beginning of your Bachelor's degree in Computer Science at TU Braunschweig, you will be assigned a professor of Computer Science as a mentor.

The contact details of your assigned mentor will be sent to you by e-mail at the beginning of the lecture period to the e-mail address you provided in your application. If you have not received an e-mail, please contact the Course Coordination.

If you have not acquired at least 30 credit points after the 2nd semester, you are obliged to take part in a consultation with your mentor.

Please note:

Admission to further coursework and examinations requires proof of participation in the counseling interview (see General Examination Regulations of TU Braunschweig § 8 and BPO 2017 § 7)!

This means specifically for you:

If you cannot provide proof of at least 30 credit points at the end of your 2nd semester, you must have attended the mentoring interview and submitted the corresponding proof to the Examination Office for Computer Science before the start of the next examination registration period. Otherwise, you will be blocked from registering for and taking examinations and coursework in the 3rd semester! You must then have submitted the proof before the start of the following examination registration period, etc.

The following generally applies:

Proof must be submitted to the Examinations Office by the first day of the examination registration period of the third semester. As long as your proof of the mentoring interview has not been submitted to the Examinations Office for Computer Science, you will remain blocked for all subsequent semesters and you will not be credited for any coursework or examinations that you complete during this time! The deadline for a later submission of proof for the following semesters is also the first day of the examination registration period.

If you no longer know who your mentor is, please contact Course Coordination Yvonne Dietze. This is also your contact person if you would like to change your mentor.

In accordance with § 18 APO, you have the opportunity to acquire credit points beyond the scope provided for the individual degree programmes until the end of the semester in which the examinations and coursework required to complete the degree programme have been completed.

Before registering, students must apply to the Examination Board for Computer Science for the examination or coursework to be recognised as additional work. If the corresponding capacity is available, courses from other degree programmes can also be used. In this context, students from Bachelor's degree programmes can acquire a maximum of 36 CP of examination and study credits from Master's degree programmes for a future Master's degree programme. Upon separate application to the Examination Board for Computer Science, additional achievements (module, grade and number of credit points) can be included in the certificate, but are not taken into account when calculating the overall grade. This application for inclusion in the transcript must be submitted no later than 4 weeks after taking the last additional examination.

In case of illness, a  medical certificate must be submitted to the examination office within 3 working days. The day of the examination is considered the 1st working day. If the last day of the deadline for submitting the medical certificate is a Saturday, Sunday or public holiday, the submission deadline will be extended accordingly by this day and you may submit the sick note on the following working day. If you do not submit a medical certificate, the examination will be graded as "failed" (grade 5.0). If the medical certificate is sent by post, the date of the postmark will count as proof that the submission deadline has been met.

If the student is unable to take part in the same examination for the third time due to illness, a certificate from a medical specialist, psychologist or psychotherapist must be submitted which is sufficiently informative to enable the examination board to determine the cause, degree, type and, if applicable, duration of the impairment.

A medical certificate can be submitted:

• In person via the Central Post Office (Universitätsplatz 2)
• By post (if the sick note is sent by post, the date of the postmark counts as proof that the deadline has been met). It is your responsibility to ensure that a postmark with the date is legible on the letter.

As a service for students, the examination offices of the Carl Friedrich Gauß Faculty accept the scanned original of the sick note in advance by e-mail or fax to meet the deadline. The original of the medical certificate must then be submitted to the examination office responsible for you within one week. If the original of the sick note is not submitted to the examination office within one week, the examination will be graded as "failed" (5.0).

Seminar allocation begins with the application procedure via Stud.IP. The exact dates when this application procedure starts will be announced in good time on the notice board next to the Examination Office for Computer Science, via the Computer Science mailing list ("cs-studs") and on the degree programme websites.

To reserve seminar places via Stud.IP, you will need your y-number with the corresponding password. You must also enter your study profile in Stud.IP, making sure that you have entered the correct degree programme.

You can only apply for a computer science seminar if you study...

• Computer Science (B.Sc./M.Sc.),
• Information Systems Engineering

or

• business informatics

If all seminar places for your chosen seminar are already taken in the Stud.IP system, the system will automatically place you on a waiting list.

Binding registration for the seminar then takes place during the respective preliminary seminar meeting of the institute or department ("kick-off"). This is also where the individual seminar topics are assigned. As the completion of a seminar is compulsory in the Bachelor's or Master's degree programme in Computer Science, preference is given to students who have not yet completed a seminar.

How do I cancel my registration for a seminar in Computer Science?

You can deregister from a seminar up to 2 weeks after the start of lectures at the latest by contacting your seminar supervisor. After this deadline, enrolment is binding. A later cancellation of the seminar will be counted as a failed examination attempt (grade 5.0), as the seminar is an examination. The following also applies to the seminar as an examination: You have a total of 3 examination attempts.

As the team project is a collaboration between several students, at least 4 students must register for a team project at the institute. Please contact the respective institute yourself to find out whether your favoured team project is also offered in the corresponding semester. It is not necessary to register with the Examination Office for Computer Science, as the team project is an academic achievement. After successful completion, you will usually receive a certificate of achievement (Schein) from the institute carrying out the project, which you should send to the Examinations Office for Computer Science in good time for booking and retention in your examination file.

There is a separate cancellation and submission deadline for term papers. Notwithstanding Section 11 (1) APO, registration for the examination can be withdrawn without giving reasons by February 15 in the respective winter semester and by August 15 in the respective summer semester. In addition to Section 9 (12) APO, the submission deadline for term papers in the winter semester is March 15 of the respective winter semester and in the summer semester September 15 of the respective summer semester. The student may only register for the term paper if he or she has previously received a topic for the term paper. The examination registration for the term paper is deemed to be the student's confirmation that he or she has been given a topic for a term paper.

If you have failed examinations from the compulsory elective areas or from the minor subject in Computer Science in the first attempt, but no longer wish to continue with the module, you have the option of changing the module a total of three times. To do this, you must submit an application to the Examination Board for Computer Science stating that a repeat examination is not required and that the failed examination will be replaced by another alternative examination. However, any compulsory modules in the minor subject cannot be deselected. The application must be submitted by the first day of the examination registration period of the following semester at the latest.

In the area of "Key Qualifications", 5 CP (according to BPO 2017) must be completed in the Bachelor's degree programme in Computer Science:

• When choosing the specialisation "Medical Informatics", the module "Medicine 2" must be taken in the area of "Key Qualifications".
• When choosing the minor subject "Business Administration", only 3 CP instead of 5 CP must be taken in the area of "Key Qualifications".

In this area, modules from the overall programme of interdisciplinary courses at TU Braunschweig can be included which, according to the module handbook, require an active performance record for successful participation (e.g. written examination, term paper, presentation, etc.). Courses from the "Action-related competences" programme can also be included here.

However, the following modules may not be selected (for details, please refer to the website of the Bachelor's degree programme in Computer Science):

• Modules from Computer Science
• Modules from the subjects that the student has chosen as a minor subject
• Modules from the sports centre

Language courses may be included from the following level:

• an English course of at least level B2
• all other languages from level B1

German language courses may only be recognised by foreign students from level C1 onwards after prior application to the Examination Board for Computer Science. Language courses in the mother tongue or in the official language of the home country are not recognised.

An application must be submitted to the Examination Board for Computer Science for the recognition of language courses with a level lower than the prescribed B1. However, this does not apply to English and German, where the prescribed level is mandatory! The application must be accompanied by proof that the respective language has not already been learnt during school.

In accordance with Section 14 (9) of the APO, only students who...

• fulfil the requirements set out in the BPO

and

• have completed at least 1/3 of the credits required for successful completion of the degree programme at TU Braunschweig (or at a TU9 university).

The following also applies to the BPO 2017: The Bachelor's thesis cannot be registered until the compulsory areas "Fundamentals of Computer Science", "Fundamentals of Mathematics" and "Fundamentals of Computer Science of Systems" have been successfully completed. The literature research is an academic achievement (2 CP) to be completed in preparation for the Bachelor's thesis, which is part of the compulsory module "Propädeutikum". It is therefore part of the Bachelor's thesis in terms of content and must be discussed by the student with the supervising professor. After successfully completing the thesis, the student receives a certificate from the supervising institute/professor, which must be submitted to the Examinations Office for Computer Science in a timely manner. As soon as this certificate has been received by the Examination Office for Computer Science, the Bachelor's thesis can be registered.

The registration form for the Bachelor's thesis must be completed in full and signed by the first assessor and the student. The second assessor must also be stated on this registration form in accordance with Section 14 (4) APO. The completed form must be submitted to the Examination Office for Computer Science by the student or the supervising institute within 1 week. The student and the first assessor will then receive an email with the submission date of the Bachelor's thesis as well as other important information on processing, e.g. on how to proceed if the student falls ill during the Bachelor's thesis.

Upon application to the Examination Board for Computer Science and in consultation with the first supervisor, the second supervisor can also be appointed by the student from outside the university.

In case of illness during the thesis processing period, a medical certificate must be submitted. Please note that backdating the start of the certificate of incapacity for work to a day before the start of treatment is only possible in exceptional cases.

• The medical certificate must be submitted to the Examination Office on the third working day after the illness has been diagnosed.
• The day on which the illness is diagnosed counts as the first working day. A Saturday also counts as a working day. If the third and therefore last day of the submission deadline for the medical certificate is a Saturday, Sunday or public holiday, the submission deadline will be extended accordingly by this day and the medical certificate may be submitted on the following working day. If two medical certificates have already been submitted during the thesis processing period, the third and any subsequent sick note must be a certificate from a specialist doctor, psychologist or psychotherapist, which must be sufficiently informative to enable the examination board to determine the cause, degree, type and, if applicable, duration of the impairment.
• Medical certificate = certificate of incapacity for work or medical certificate on which the addition "Unable to take exams" must be included.
• How can I submit the medical certificate on time?
  • As a service for students, the examination offices of the Carl-Friedrich-Gauß-Faculty accept the scanned original of the sick note in advance by e-mail or fax (fax number 0531 391 8220) in order to meet the deadline. The original of the medical certificate must then be submitted to the examination office responsible for you within one week. If the original of the sick note is not submitted to the examination office within one week, the processing time for the thesis will not be extended.
  • In person at the examination office responsible for you, except in the case of infectious diseases.
  • By post (if the sick note is sent by post, the date of the postmark counts as proof that the deadline has been met). It is your responsibility to ensure that a postmark with the date is legible on the letter.

Important: The sick note must be submitted to the Examination Office before the official deadline.

The thesis must be submitted in electronic form:

To do this, upload the thesis via TUConnect. The upload date is the submission date! No printed copies will be submitted to the Examination Office. However, the reviewers may request printed versions of the thesis. You should clarify whether this is the case directly with the assessors. The deadline for submitting the printed version to the reviewers is five days from the upload date (Section 14 (7) sentence 4 APO).

In the event of technical problems (e.g. upload process), please contact your examination office before the submission deadline (by email).

The title of the thesis must match the registered title when the thesis is submitted:

In case of a change of title, the "Application to change the title of the thesis" must be submitted to the Examinations Office by email (including the signature of the first assessor) up to 7 days before the thesis is uploaded. Please use the template sent to you.

You will receive all further information from us after registration in the document "Information sheet for submitting the thesis".

External theses in particular are only possible within the framework of existing co-operations between individual institutes of computer science and external companies. Here, too, the topic may only be issued by the respective supervisor at the institute. Before registering the Bachelor's thesis, an application must be submitted to the Examination Board for Computer Science. Together with this application, proof of the suitability of the desired external second assessor as an examiner in accordance with § 5 paragraph 1 APO must be submitted as well as the written consent of the first assessor, a professor of the Department of Computer Science.

Please note that you cannot acquire a topic externally yourself.

When registering for the first examination in a minor subject, you must declare in writing which minor subject you have chosen. Please use the document provided for this purpose.

According to BPO 2017 §4 paragraph 10, the minor subject can be changed once and only within the standard period of study (6 semesters).

The following conditions must be fulfilled:

• A second examination attempt must not be registered for any of the examinations already taken in the minor subject.
• The minor subject must not have been completed in full.
• The application to change the minor subject must be submitted by the end of the semester in which the standard period of study ends.

The achievements that have already been successfully passed as part of the deselected minor subject will be cancelled without substitution and cannot be subsequently converted into additional examinations.

Which minor subjects can I choose?

The following minor subjects are currently available on the Bachelor's degree programme in Computer Science:

• Advanced Industrial Management
• Business administration
• Communication Networks
• Mechanical engineering/mechatronics
• Mathematics
• Medicine
• Philosophy
• Psychology
• Aerospace Engineering
• Signal processing

If you are planning to spend a semester abroad at another university, you should start planning at least six months in advance (for overseas programmes it is recommended that you even start planning one year in advance)!

Firstly, you should draw up an overview of the modules that you would like to take during your exchange semester at the foreign university. Then please contact the International Coordinator Marvin Plagge (Faculty 1, Rebenring 58a) with the module descriptions and ask him to confirm whether and how you can best incorporate the planned module into your course of study.

Please bring the completed exchange plan with you, showing the content, the number of SWS and the number of CPs to be completed. Please have this countersigned by Mr Plagge and the chair of the examination board as a sign of acknowledgement.

Only after you have successfully completed the planned examinations and coursework abroad can you submit an application to the Examination Board for Computer Science for recognition of the coursework completed there. Please remember to enclose a copy of the relevant transcripts of records with this application, whereby the grades, credit hours and number of credit points earned must always be shown for the coursework completed abroad.

To have achievements recognised, you must proceed as follows:

Complete the "Recognition of achievements" form and submit it to the Examinations Office together with the grade transcripts and a description of the content of the courses attended.

Bear in mind:

• The responsible lecturer must confirm that recognition is recommended for the work to be recognised.
• Recognition of parts of examinations is excluded.
• Applications for recognition must be submitted within the first semester of study, or by the end of the following semester if the credit is acquired later. If individual parts of a module have been recognised by the Examination Board for Computer Science, the corresponding module must be completed by the end of the degree programme.
