Kinder-Uni 2024: Motto "Ecology"

The Kinder-Uni with the motto ‘Ecology’ consists of three parts :

  • Part 1: Lecture in the Audimax on 16 November 2024: Prof. Dr Robert Hänsch: ‘Why are trees stressed?’.
  • Part 2: Podcast series, produced with TU scientists, the primary and secondary school in Rüningen
  • Part 3: Explanatory videos on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations.

For parents and accompanying persons, the lecture will be transmitted to a neighbouring lecture hall!

This year, we are once again cooperating with the city of Braunschweig (Department of Schools and the Education Office), for the first time with the primary and secondary school in Rüningen.

The motto is ‘Ecology’ and our children's university programme with explanatory videos, a podcast series and a large final lecture is geared towards this.

The Kinder-Uni Braunschweig is sponsored by the Ecki-Wohlgehagen Stiftung and the Bürgerstiftung Braunschweig. Thank you very much!

Warum haben Bäume Stress?

Lecture: “Why are trees stressed?”

Prof. Dr. Robert Hänsch| Institute of Plant Biology  in the Audimax on November 16, 2024

Lecture content: Imagine the forest was your school class. Then over three quarters of your class would be ill. - This is how the forest in Germany is currently doing. Only 20% of the trees in our forests are still healthy. The main reason for this is the climate change. The earth is currently almost 1.5°C warmer than it was without factories, cars and airplanes. As a result of this rise in temperature, plants are increasingly suffering from drought stress. For fungi and insects, however, the higher temperature is a very good living condition and they damage the forest.

In the lecture we learn: How do plants protect themselves in this situation? Why is it so important that we humans support the forest? What can we do so that our forest will hopefully soon be better again?

For parents and accompanying persons, the lecture will be broadcast in a neighboring lecture hall!
