How and why do fuel cells age in airplanes, and what can be done about it? Such questions are explored in the project 'C6.1: Data-driven understanding of aviation PEM fuel cells under reliability aspects.' Initially, the dominant aging mechanisms are identified and reproduced in the laboratory. The generated data are then used to predict the aging of the fuel cell through machine learning. This allows the determination of strategies for extending the lifespan and increasing the reliability of the fuel cell system in aviation applications, such as passenger airplanes.
