The project C2.1 ‘Fundamentals of ElectroFuel Synthesis for Aviation’ is investigating the synthesis of regenerative fuels for new combustion technologies. For this purpose electrochemical and bioelectrochemical synthesis routes from renewable precursors are exploited. In order to identify reactions and reaction conditions that are suitable for practical applications, the energy efficiency and product selectivity of different electrochemical processes under varying conditions are examined. Reaction kinetics and occurring intermediates are assigned to deepen the understanding of the underlying reaction mechanisms. The experimental studies are complemented by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to gain insight into the processes at the electrode interfaces on a molecular level.
