The innovation project "ÖkoProFeiLa – Ecohydraulic Processes from Field to Laboratory" creates an additional course offering based on the concept of research-based learning. This course is addressed to students in the Master's programme with the specialization "Coastal and Ocean Engineering" from the fields of civil, environmental and industrial engineering as well as environmental sciences.
Within the framework of the course planned for the summer semester 2022, students will conduct research in interdisciplinary groups on current research topics in the field and in the hydraulic engineering laboratory. The students go through the entire research cycle: from the perception of a problem and the development of a research question, through the planning, execution and evaluation of a field study, to the conception of a research design and the reflection of the research results. They work independetly in small groups with the support of research associates.
The new teaching offer combines the basic courses of the first master semester, the practical laboratory course as well as the excursions. It prepares the students to write their Master thesis independently and scientifically. In addition to the pure professional competence by dealing with current research topics of coastal engineering, the students will also strengthen interdisciplinary competences such as methodological competence and social skills e.g. by independently developing the methodological approach to research questions and working in small groups.
The new course offers students the opportunity to experience field research in coastal engineering at the Technische Universität Braunschweig. This makes the study experience more holistic, which extends the portfolio of the Technische Universität Braunschweig and consolidates acquired knowledge better compared to conventional lectures.
