The primary tasks in both fundamental and applied research are directly derived from the highly nonlinear, dynamic, stochastic, and complex nature of the processes and interactions in coastal zones, as well as from the new challenges in a changing climate associated with the development of new concepts and solutions to sustainably cope with the ever increasing use and protection of coastal zones against floods and erosion.
To tackle these new challenges, increasing interdisciplinary collaborations with national and international partners is required together with more nuanced and advanced methods, modelling tools, and measuring techniques.
