The city of Duisburg is a city that has existed since the Middle Ages near the river mouth of Ruhr into the Rhine. In its functional and scenic references, it can be assigned to the Lower Rhine region, the Rhine-Ruhr conurbation as well as the Ruhr area. Due to its geographically favorable location, Duisburg developed as a trading city and experienced in part extreme growth in the course of industrialization beginning in the 19th century. Today, the city is home to more than half a million people, an internationally important location for steel production and an anchor point of the Belt and Road initiative, the international trade route connecting Duisburg with China. Despite this importance, the city is one of the poorest municipalities in Germany and shows strong structural weaknesses, especially in the northern parts of the city.
In the context of the bachelor thesis, a spatial strategy for a subarea of the inner-city, medieval center is to be developed and elaborated in design terms on the basis of the Schlaun competition. The design area is located in a prominent position, between the Swan Gate Bridge at the inner harbor and the Kuhlenwall. Furthermore, the city hall (incl. subway station), the late gothic Salvatorkirche, the Burgplatz and two urban squares are located here.
The goal of the thesis is a robust urban design that strengthens the qualities of the site and proposes solutions for sustainable, climate-friendly use, as well as improved transport links. The task is derived from the competition documents, but can be adapted according to the concept developed from the analysis.
