History

As the oldest technical university in Germany, the Technical University of Braunschweig has a long tradition in teaching and research in engineering and natural sciences. This also applies to computer science, which celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2012. The rapid development and innovation, particularly in the technical fields, led to the early inclusion of computer science as an independent discipline in the university's curriculum. After the establishment of a chair for data processing systems within the field of electrical engineering in 1968, the first two chairs for programming languages and operating systems were appointed in 1972, marking the start of teaching within a joint interdisciplinary degree program in mathematics and electrical engineering.

On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Computer Science program at the Technical University of Braunschweig, an anthology was published. This volume provides an in-depth exploration of the history of computer science at the university and highlights the development of the field in Braunschweig. In addition to a contribution by Roland Vollmar, a pioneer of Braunschweig's computer science, who outlines the historical development of computer science in Germany, the book offers an overview of the structural development of the department in Braunschweig – from the establishment of the first chairs to the establishment of computer science as an independent faculty.
