This code is part of the class of multiple vortex-line methods, which had been developed by Prof. Dr.-Ing. K.H. Horstmann (Link, Institute of Aerodynamics and Flow Technology, German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Braunschweig, 1987). The potential-theoretical method permits the computation of total aerodynamic coefficients and lift distributions for aircraft configurations with arbitrary lifting surfaces arranged in the geometry space (e.g. Wing-HTP-VTP-configuration). LIFTING_LINE® assumes incompressible flow on thin surfaces. With the implemented Göthert correction is an application on compressible, subsonic flows possible. The simple geometry input for grid generation, the flexibility due a wide range of configurations and the fast computation time favour the method for an application in aircraft design. The IFL uses LIFTING_LINE® integrated with the design tool PrADO to estimate aerodynamic maps (CL, CDi, CM) and load distributions for fuselage and wing weight calculations.
