Today we would like to introduce you to Andreas Kolb, who works as a research assistant at the Institute for Urban Water Management.
He is committed to the “Clean Water and Sanitation” goal and answered a few questions for us.
How does your work relate to this SDG?
Sanitation systems and wastewater treatment as well as the provision of high-quality drinking water are the core tasks of urban water management (SiWaWi).
How did you become interested in this topic and where does your interest come from?
I have always been fascinated by the topic of water. There is a universe to discover in every puddle. During my studies, I fell in love with my first lecture. I was really hooked when I delved deeper into the subject and realized what an exciting mix of biology, chemistry, physics and engineering SiWaWi entails.
What made you get involved with this SDG?
Initially, it was mainly the opportunity to actively protect the environment from us humans. Later, this appealing idea of recovering important recyclable materials and resources, large quantities of which are currently lost in wastewater, and closing cycles was added. We are currently researching this in the “P-Net” or “HypoWave +” project. Apart from that, there is always the international context in SiWaWi, because in many countries there is no European standard in this area. This is despite the fact that clean water and adequate sanitation are human rights. Working on these challenges motivates me.
Is there a link between your topic and other SDGs?
Almost all SDGs are related to the topic of water in one way or another
Which 3 words do you associate with this SDG?
Common good, life, cycle
