Prof. Dr. Simone Bergmann hält eine Kachel zu SDG 3

Today we would like to introduce you to Prof. Dr. Simone Bergmann, who works at the Institute of Microbiology as head of the “Streptococcus” group.

She is committed to the “Health and Well-being” goal and answered a few questions for us.

How does your work relate to this SDG? How did you become interested in this topic and where does your interest come from?

As an infection biologist, I am primarily concerned with the effect of infectious germs on humans and animals and see a direct link between the goals of my field of research and the Sustainable Development Goals in the area of “Good Health and Well Beeing”. Both local and global infection events in recent years have clearly shown that maintaining the health of nature and the environment is directly linked to social health and personal well-being. The appreciation and responsible use of habitats and natural resources have an enormous influence on the risk of spreading infectious diseases and other health restrictions. As a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the national One Health Platform, I am actively involved in planning and supporting research projects that deal with the effects of a drastically changing environment on the general health of humans and animals.

My aim as an SDG sponsor is to raise awareness of the need to achieve the SDGs and also to promote interdisciplinary exchange with other interest groups, research institutions and local authorities. This also includes the increased integration of relevant research approaches and project information into courses.

What prompted you to get involved in this SDG?

An important impetus for my increased commitment to the SDG was the Green Office's excellent information events on the sustainability projects and the SDG program. I find the continuously strong commitment of the students involved in the areas of sustainability and climate protection groundbreaking and exemplary! I would definitely like to play a supporting role here and give the SDG projects the necessary impetus.
