First blueprints for the Large Wave Flume (LWF) were drafted in 1969 within the Collaborative Research Centre "Water Research in the Coastal Zone" (SFB 79).
After a four-year construction period and associated costs of 20 million Deutsche Mark (approx. 10 mio. €), the LWF saw its inauguration on September 16th, 1983.
