The Coastal Research Center (CRC) in Hanover Marienwerder harbors one of the largest wave flumes worldwide. The CRC is a major research institution funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) and is operated and cofounded as a joint institute between the Leibniz University Hannover and the Technical University of Braunschweig. It constitutes a major knowledge hub for coastal engineering, well known and recognized around the world through collaboration and transnational projects. The CRC is a member of the German Marine Research Consortium (KDM) since July 2018 and joined the Deutsche Allianz Meeresforschung (DAM) in February 2020.
With the help of the Large Wave Flume (LWF), large scale experiments are carried out investigating phenomena in the fields of coastal protection, sediment transport, maritime energy and eco-hydraulics. This large scale facilitates reliable investigations into hydrodynamic, morphodynamic and ecological processes such as wave breaking, sediment transport, soil dynamics and wave transformation omitting scaling law related problems and limitations. Given the unique research conditions, the CRC enjoys an international reputation among marine, geologic and engineering scientists alike. Results improve coastal protection levels against impeding storm surges and climate related sea level rise alike.
