Tsunami Engineering

Tsunami Engineering

Objectives

The course "Tsunami Engineering" provides an overview of the most relevant aspects of tsunami science and protective engineering. These include the tsunami phenomena and the processes that take place from the formation of the tsunami to the flooding of the coast. Building on this, the tsunami effects on infrastructure and buildings as well as people and the environment are described.

The Tohoku Tsunami in 2011 devastated the east coast of Japan and reminded us of the destructive power of tsunamis. Subsequently, the coastal protection and evacuation methods were extended extensively in order to achieve a higher standard of protection for human lives. Therefore, the risk management strategies are discussed using the example of the coastal protection strategy on the east coast of Japan.

Topics
