The course Coastal Engineering and Coastal Protection for the North Sea imparts the special features of coastal protection in the North Sea. The historical change of the coast is considered in order to evaluate current and future developments of the coasts. The functionalities of different coastal protection elements, their dimensioning, the holistic coastal protection strategy at the North Sea as well as current projects of island and coastal protection are presented.
During the excursion to the North Sea, complex problems and solutions of coastal protection will be discussed using the example of the mainland coast of Lower Saxony and the island of Norderney. In particular, the influence of various interest groups such as nature conservation, local residents, tourism and the planning engineer will be compared.
