Urban production and location analysis
Student thesis
Description
Urban production offers opportunities to tackle the problems caused by global value and logistics chains. A major advantage of urban production is that transport routes can be avoided and locally available resources can be utilised. To this end, symbiotic production networks can be established, favoured by the proximity of the urban location. In these networks, exchange relationships between individual companies and their locations can be created on a material level, among other things. In order to investigate the symbiosis potential of individual urban regions, it is necessary to analyse the local company structure. In addition, the interaction between a location and its immediate surroundings in the urban area is crucial. To this end, locations and companies must be analysed and compared with each other.
Different urban regions have a variety of manufacturing companies of different sizes and with different business objectives. By analysing the geographical locations and other metadata, such as the product category manufactured or the materials used, conclusions can be drawn about the distribution of manufacturing companies and their potential for exchange relationships of material (e.g. waste from one company as production input for another company) and immaterial (e.g. excess heat) goods. In addition, an analysis of existing industrial structures and legal framework conditions can provide clues for the choice of location for production companies.
In the field of analysing production sites and their interactions with their (urban) environment, many aspects and details are examined.
Various student theses can be written in this subject area with an individual focus.
