Head of the Institute 1994 - 2019

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Norbert Dichtl was born in Frankfurt/Main in 1951. After completing his studies in civil engineering at the TH Darmstadt and subsequently working as a structural engineer and site manager in Frankfurt am Main, he was employed as a research assistant in the Department of Sanitary Engineering at the Technical University of Munich and the Ruhr University of Bochum.  In 1984, he completed his doctorate in Bochum on the subject of "Stabilization of sewage sludge with special consideration of a two-stage aerobic/anaerobic process control". After receiving his doctorate, he worked as an engineer and managing director of GKE mbH, Gesellschaft für Kläranlagenausrüstung und Energieverwertung, in Bochum and Gladbeck. 

In 1994, he was appointed professor at the Technical University of Braunschweig and headed the Institute for Sanitary and Environmental Engineering until 2019. Here, too, the focus in research and teaching was on the topic of sewage sludge and he was able to inspire students with his professional experience, his enthusiasm for the topic and his entertaining way of lecturing.

For several decades, Norbert Dichtl actively supported the work of the DWA as a member, chairman and main committee chairman in the areas of sewage sludge, biogas as well as education and international cooperation. His achievements for wastewater and sludge management were honored with the DWA Badge of Honor. After the summer semester 2019, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Norbert Dichtl retired and ended his active work at the institute.

Head of the Institute 1970 - 1993

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dr. Techn. h.c. Rolf Kayser was born in Oldenburg in 1931. After training as a bricklayer, he studied civil engineering at the Technical University of Braunschweig. In 1967, he received his doctorate with distinction. His dissertation "Contribution to the determination of oxygen supply under operating conditions" was awarded the Karl Imhoff Prize by the ATV (now DWA). After further positions in Vienna and Austin, Texas, Rolf Kayser was appointed Professor of Sanitary Engineering at the Technical University of Braunschweig in 1970. He taught there until 1993. Professor Kayser was a doctoral supervisor in the best sense of the word to 27 young academics. Professor Kayser's achievements for urban water management were recognized with the DWA Badge of Honor, the Honorary Doctorate of the Vienna University of Technology (1997), the William Dunbar Medal of the EWA (2002) and the Federal Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (1998).

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dr. Techn. h.c. Rolf Kayser, for many an admired colleague, teacher, advisor and promoter, died on May 24, 2011. With his death, the professional world has lost an exceptional university teacher, scientist and practically-oriented researcher. He devoted his personality and his life unreservedly to his profession and his family. We will not forget Rolf Kayser.
