How will disruptive processes such as climate change with global warming of 1.5 to 3 degrees Celsius (IPCC) or demographic changes affect urban development and the design of our cities? The actual changes for our everyday lives in our own living environment seem difficult to imagine at first glance: the question therefore arises as to what an urban neighbourhood liveable for all may look like in the future in order to counter the consequences of climate change, such as heat, and at the same time contribute to effective climate protection. What spatial potentials arise from long-term, radical visions for coping with the effects of climate change?
An inner-city neighbourhood in Braunschweig will be explored as an experimental field in order to develop provocative and progressive scenarios and spatial design strategies on different scales for climatic and demographic development for the year 2050. The focus is on aspects of sustainability such as water, biodiversity, energy, mobility, materials and the circular economy.
The seminar teaches a conceptual design methodology as applied in practice and research by architecture and urban design firms such as MVRDV from Rotterdam. The topics mentioned are analysed separately and translated into a toolbox of potential spatial interventions. These aspects are elaborated in a playful and creative design catalogue and translated into a toolbox of potential spatial interventions. Potential combinations and transferability to other contexts and projects will be examined.
During the workshop week - with lectures, rapid designs and discussion rounds - from 17 to 21 February, we will create the Climate Catalogue 2050. The explorative approach, creativity, experiments and discussions are crucial to finding innovative solutions and transferable strategies for Braunschweig 2050 and beyond.
The seminar is part of the research project COABS - Co-Adapted Braunschweig (http://www.braunschweig.de/coabs) funded by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV).
