Magdeburg is shaped by change: An imperial metropolis, an industrial city, a center of Neues Bauen, district capital in the GDR, state capital of Sachsen-Anhalt. Reconstruction after WW2 was based on ideas of modernism as well as examples of socialist classicism. Reunification meant a major rupture for the city with a starting process of rapid deindustrialization. Parts of the port have been abandoned for 30 years while there are first examples of redensification in the city center. The artefacts of these periods as well as the effects of the Elbe floodings 2003/2013 can still be traced today and they provide an interesting base for urban ideas regarding future needs and challenges.
There are perspectives for the regional development, the improvement of employment and economy: As a university city as well as a center for sciences and as an industrial center given the recent decision to establish two factories for computer chip-production. The SP site is located between the city center and the river Elbe. The aim lies in ideas for a redensification of the area in order to obtain a vivid and climate resistant urban neighborhood which draws up visions for a sustainable development of Magdeburg. Special attention will be devoted to both, strategies of modifying existing buildings and the proximity to the river Elbe - a significant natural landmark and a sometimes-disruptive element.
