The Rheinische Revier (RR) as an industrial and scientific region faces major challenges with the coal phase-out decided in 2020 and against the backdrop of climate change and the energy transition. Open-cast lignite mines and power plants shaped the area to a particular extent in the last century. In the Rheinische Revier, three Expos are planned at three locations at intervals of six years (2026, 2032, 2038). Since the complex issues of structural change must be understood and supported primarily by civil society, the EXPO is to be designed for broad communication and participation. The design class is based on the seminar "Expo Rheinisches Revier" and its aim is to develop spatial architectural solutions for an Expo site and the IBTA exhibition in continuation of the seminar.
Spatial themes of the EXPO will include bioeconomy, digitalization and new agriculture, but also urban planning, architecture as well as the integration into the cultural space will play a decisive role for the design. Of interest in the compact design will be how to embed these themes into the landscape as a spatial communication format and give the industrial tradition of the region a counterpart in the Expo. How can a contemporary, sustainable Expo be a place of exchange, knowledge transfer and future coexistence for the region beyond the duration of the exhibition?
