Course Objective

The students obtain fundamental knowledge in the continuum analysis of fluids. The student know suited simplifications of equations of motion and analytical and empirical solution methods. The students are able to relate application oriented problems of fluid mechanics to analytical, empirical and mathematical models and to solve the associated mathematical relations.

Course Content

  • General characteristics of fluids
  • Stream filament theory for incompressible and compressible fluids
  • Equations of motion for multidimensional flows, applications of momentum equation
  • Viscous flows, Navier-Stokes equations, boundary layer theory
  • Class room experiments: tube flow, transition laminar/turbulent, flows over airfoils and blunt bodies

Exam preparation

We offer additional consultation hours in advance of the exam. More information is available here.

The exam consists of four parts:

1- Short questions to check understanding of theory

2- Application of the Bernoulli-Equation

3- Application of the Momentum Equation

4- Viscous flows

The last week of lecture/tutorial is used as preparation for the exam, using examples of similar difficulty to the exam tasks. Furthermore, the institute publishes the exam tasks of the last years, please see below. You need to log in in order to download them.
