Lecture:
Date and time: Friday 14.00 - 15.30
Location: DLR Braunschweig, Hermann-Schlichting-Haus (Building 130), 3. Floor, Room 315)
Start: 27.10.2023
Lecturer: Dr. - Ing. A. Seitz (DLR)

If you are interested, please register at (0531) 295 2431 or arne.seitz(at)dlr.de

Prerequisite

Basic knowledge in aerodynamics and flight mechanics, as well as practical experience in gliding are helpful. However, by teaching some basics at the begin, the lecture is also open to students with less background knowledge.

Course Objective

Students will acquire the knowledge in aerodynamics as well as flight dynamics needed for the general arrangement and detailed design of sailplanes. They are acquainted with the definition of sailplane  requirements and learn how to transfer these into an optimized design. Students are able to determine and asses the characteristics of wings, tailplanes and fuselages. The have the ability to utilize basic tools for design and analysis of sailplane components and apply them for problem solving.

Course Content

  • Fundamentals of aerodynamics and flight dynamics, definition of sailplane requirements based on cross-country flight theory
  • Aerodynamic and flight dynamic optimization of the sailplane design
  • Determination of flight performance and handling qualities
  • Development trends
