  Schedule overview

Course Objective

The students know the aerodynamic and aerothermodynamic flow phenomena of hypersonic flight and the underlying
flow equations. They have detailed knowledge in the gasdynamic analysis of hypersonic flows and are familiar with
viscous transport of momentum and energy in high-speed boundary layers. The students are able to associate the
complex flow processes of high-speed vehicles with gasdynamic and boundary layer phenomena. They know suited
analysis methods.

Course Content

  • Classification of space vehicles, basics of flight trajectories, aerothermodynamic flow regimes
  • high-temperature effects in fluids and radiation, gasdynamics in supersonic and hypersonic flows
  • equations of shocks and expansions, Mach number independence, hypersonic approximate methods, high-speed flows with viscous momentum exchange and heat transfer
  • Reynolds analogy, hypersonic laminar and turbulent flow, heat transfer in stagnation points and attachment lines
  • shock/shock and shock/boundary-layer interactions, transition laminar/turbulent in hypersonic boundary layers
