Course Objective

Through taking this course, students will:

  • Gain an understanding of the fundamental aerodynamics, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics and gas kinetics involving vehicles travelling beyond the speed of sound.
  • Predict the forces and heat transfer of high-speed vehicles using simplified models. Perform simple analyses to evaluate their performance.
  • Be aware of more complex analysis tools that can be employed to investigate flow behavior about high-speed vehicles.

Course Content

Course content:

  • Classifications and taxonomy of high-speed vehicles
  • Property variation within atmospheres and implications for re-entry
  • Simplified models for re-entry
  • Basics of kinetic gas theory, gas mixtures and dissociation equilibrium
  • Orthogonal and oblique shocks and expansions
  • Inviscid methods for force approximation
  • Compressible boundary layers, heat transfer and transition.
