As part of the HYBATS project "Hybrid Ice Protection on Advanced Natural Laminar Slat" in the aviation research program LUFO VI.3, we are working together with project partners from industry and research on the integration of a new hybrid ice protection system in a thermoplastic slat. To this end, the Braunschweig ice wind tunnel is first being converted at ISM so that the icing and subsequent de-icing of a slat can be investigated on a full scale. Simulation tools will be used to design the new wind tunnel measuring section in order to minimize the resulting differences in the flow around the aerofoil in free flow vs. installation in the wind tunnel. The converted wind tunnel is then calibrated so that the hybrid ice protection system can be tested experimentally in the next step. The increase in efficiency of the de-icing and ice protection system will therefore be tested. In the final step, uncertainty analyses are planned to ensure the reproducibility and validity of the experimental work on the new wind tunnel.
