The Institute of Joining and Welding is currently investigating the effect of laser treatment on aluminum surfaces. Laser surface treatment can dramatically increase the surface area by forming complex three-dimensional morphology, as well as changing the chemical composition of the surface and producing a completely new oxide film. The several researchers found that the laser treatment on metal surface enhances bonding strength and corrosion resistance at the interface but its mechanism has stayed unclear due to a complicated behavior of the oxide film. The laser process parameters can alter the state of oxide formation and affect the durability of the joint.
