Admission and registration to thesis are two different steps in the „process“ thesis.
If you have fulfilled the necessary requirements for admission to thesis, please send an e-mail to: fk2-pruefungsamt(at)tu-bs.de. We will send you all information and documents you need for the subsequent registration.
To register for the thesis, all required documents must be completed, signed and submitted to the Examinations Office: Registration form and a copy of identity card.
As soon as all documents are complete, the processing time for the thesis begins. Pre- or post-dating is not permitted.
The documents for the registration of thesis can also be submitted by an authorised representative upon presentation of a power of attorney (see template under forms "All about thesis").
First examiner: In accordance with § 14 (3) APO, the topic of thesis can be assigned by members of the university lecturer group and the full-time private lecturers (i.e. habilitated members) of the subjects responsible for the degree programme.
If the second examiner is a member of the group of university lecturers in the subject (§ 5 (1) and § 14 (3) APO), retired university lecturer in the subjects may also act as first examiner. The same applies to university lecturers and private lecturers from other universities in the relevant examination subject, provided the examination board has given its approval. For theses in the Bachelor's degree programme in Chemistry, the second assessor must not only belong to the Faculty of Life Sciences at TU Braunschweig, but must also be a university lecturer in the subject of Chemistry (§ 5 BPO Chemistry Bachelor).
First Examiner | Second Examiner |
---|---|
Members of the university teaching staff and the full-time associate lecturers (i.e. habilitated) responsible for the subjects of the degree programme in each case (§ 14 (3) APO). | University lecturers or private lecturers at TU Braunschweig or other universities or other external institutions. |
Retired university lecturers in the subjects responsible for the degree programme | Member of the university lecturers‘ group of the subjects responsible for the degree programme (§14 (3) in conjunction with § 5 (1) APO). For Chemistry Bachelor: Member of the university lecturers’ group of the Chemistry department of the Faculty of Life Sciences at TU Braunschweig (§ 5, BPO Chemistry Bachelor). |
University lecturers or private lecturers from other universities in the relevant examination subject (§14 (3) APO) after approval by the Examination Board. |
List of Full Professors
List of Joint Appointments
It is possible to write your thesis at an external institution. It may be necessary for the examiner at the external institution to be appointed by the examination board. This will be checked by the Examination Office when you register your thesis. The processing period only begins once the reviewer has been appointed.
In some cases, a non-disclosure agreement is required (see non-disclosure agreement).
In accordance with § 14 (5) APO, the examination board may exceptionally extend the completion time of the thesis by up to one third in individual cases upon justified request, i.e. by stating valid reasons. In the case of Bachelor's degree programmes in Chemistry, an extension of up to three weeks is possible.
The application required for the extension of the processing time must be submitted to the Examination Office in good time, as the Examination Board will examine the reasons stated and decide whether the application will be approved. When submitting your application, please allow for a sufficiently long processing time. Applications for an extension of the processing time for the thesis that are submitted after the submission date will not be considered.
You will be informed by the Examinations Office as soon as the Examination Board has made its decision.
The required form can be found under "Forms of the Examination Office of the Faculty of Life Sciences".
Information on extending the processing time due to illness can be found as a separate entry in these FAQs.
If you fall ill between registering for the thesis and submitting it, so that you are no longer able to continue working on the thesis, the processing time can be extended.
In this case, a medical certificate (with stamp and signature) must be submitted to the Examinations Office immediately, on which a doctor certifies the case of illness. The processing time will then be extended by the number of days of illness stated on the certificate and you will be informed of the new submission date by the Examinations Office. If you are ill for more than six weeks, you will generally have to submit a new topic (§ 11 (3) APO).
You can find the required form under "Forms of the Examination Office of the Faculty of Life Sciences". Here you will also find a form that your doctor can use to certify your inability to take examinations.
If the title of the thesis should change (even just one word!), this must be applied for in advance.
The form for this can be found here "Forms of the Examination Office of the Faculty of Life Sciences".
The first examiner must approve the title change.
As long as the title change has not been applied for and approved, the thesis will not be forwarded to the examiners for assessment.
In the first third of the processing time, the topic can also be returned once and exchanged for another topic.
The thesis must be submitted via TU connect.
The upload date is the submission date!
It is not necessary to submit printed copies to the Examination Office.
However, the reviewers may request printed versions of the thesis. Please clarify directly with the reviewers whether this is the case. The deadline for submitting the printed version is five days from the upload date.
In these cases, please submit the printed versions directly to your examiner.
If you have technical problems, please contact the Examination Office before the submission deadline.

The compeltion date is the date on which the last examination or coursework required to complete the degree programme was taken. If the last examination is the final thesis, the date of uploading via TU connect is the completion date. The semester in which the last examination or coursework was completed is the final semester.
Example in which the final thesis is the last achievement:
If the thesis is uploaded on 30 September, the study programme is completed in the summer semester. If the thesis is uploaded on October 1st, the study programm is completed in the winter semester. Even if you exmatriculate on 2nd of October, the winter semester remains the final semester.
Inspection of files is possible on request during the opening hours of the Examination Office.
This application must be submitted no later than one year after the announcement of the result of the last achievment in the degree programme.
The application form can be found here "Forms of the Examination Office of the Faculty of Life Sciences".
According to § 12 (3) APO the thesis is passed if it has been evaluated with at least "sufficient" or "passed". Otherwise, the thesis is failed.
The Bachelor‘s or Master’s thesis may be repeated once if it has been assessed as „non-sufficient“ or is deemed to have been assessed as „non-sufficient“, a second repetition is excluded.
The issue of the topic for the repeat thesis hast o be applied for no later than three months after the announcement of the result of the first (failed) thesis.
If the deadline is not met, the Examination Board, in consultation with a first examiner, will assign a topic to be worked on.
If the first thesis was assessed as "failed" or is deemed to have been assessed as "failed", you will be informed of this by the responsible examination board by means of a notification.
The three-month period for applying for a new topic begins on the day after you receive the notification. If you are unsure, please ask the Examinations Office for the specific deadline.
As non-disclosure agreement you have to use the form of TU Braunschweig (see "All about the final thesis").
This agreement only needs to be submitted if this is explicitly requested (e.g. by the external institution if it is an external thesis, or by a examiner, i.e. also for thesis that are only carried out at TU BS). The non-disclosure agreement must be signed by both examiner before the start of the thesis.
