The SP 8 "Industrial water management" (University of Ostwestfalen and Lippe in cooperation with the companies A3 GmbH and enviplan GmbH) is associated with a focus on "Water technology". This subproject is using German process engineering in a pilot plant for wastewater treatment which will be adapted to the on-site conditions, further developed and optimised during the project. The main objective is the installation and the operation of the pilot plant in a company that discharges cleaned waste water into the Thi Vai River. Together with our Vietnamese partner IER, a company working in the critical area of leather production was chosen. Operating the pilot plant, it will be investigated whether an extensive cleaning of tannery wastewater including the safe removal of pollutants like sulfide-sulfur and chromium can be achieved. Pretreatment of the wastewater will be processed by the combination of micro flotation and anaerobic reactor, which already proved good performance in the framework of the BMBF project "Treatment of tapioca wastewater and sustainable water pollution control management of key economic zones in southern Vietnam". These units are implemented in the new project "EWATEC-COAST" from the expiring BMBF project and thoroughly reconditioned. The units will be supplemented by a precipitation phase and adapted to the new conditions of wastewater. The secondary treatment is carried out with a newly designed membrane bioreactor. This method is expected to produce a plant effluent of a water quality that industrial water is supposed to have. The effluent from the membrane bioreactors that is virtually solids-free, then will be tested to be recirculated into the water cycle of the tannery. The results will be part of the expected know-how transfer. Information thus obtained will be fed in the SP 3 "surface water" and in the management system. Thus, decision-support tools can be prepared for cleaning of tannery wastewater under the conditions present in Viet Nam and other countries in Southeast Asia. The SP 8 continues the previously very successful technical cooperation with its Vietnamese partner IER from the project "Tapioca waste water".
