The commercial air transport system is one of the main sources of climate-damaging greenhouse gas emissions. In order to make the aviation sector more sustainable in the long term, concepts and technologies are investigated within the Cluster of Excellence "SE²A - Sustainable and Energy-Efficient Aviation" since 2019 that should enable the operation of more environmentally friendly aircraft. Whether these concepts and technologies contribute to a more sustainable aviation sector in the sense of a holistic understanding (along the entire life cycle and taking into account environmental, economic, and social aspects) must be assessed. This question is addressed within the research project "SUMAFly – SUstainability Modeling and Analysis of Future aircraft systems", which is part of the Cluster of Excellence. In an interview with Radio Okerwelle, Alexander Barke from the AIP and Sofia Melo from the IMF talk about the objectives, contents, and challenges of the research project.
