AIP @ Asse II

On 21st of June there was an excursion within the lecture "Sustainability in Production and Logistics" to the salt mine and the current nuclear waste interim storage Asse II. Between 1967 and 1978, 125,787 barrels and containers of low- and intermediate-level radioactive material were stored in the Asse II mine at a depth of between 511m and 750m. Due to the high degree of development of the salt dome, the load of the overburden caused large displacements, which is why groundwater is now forced into the salt dome. Without regular pumping of the water, the salt dome would "sink". It is therefore the aim of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection, as the current operator, to close the mine safely, which implies the retrieval of the nuclear waste.

The participants were first informed about the background of the Asse II in an introduction and were then able to get an impression of the mine underground. Finally, the further steps towards safe decommissioning and the possible disposal of the existing nuclear waste in Asse II were discussed again.
