Master Architecture Degree

The aim of the Master's degree programme in Architecture is to provide training for all areas of architecture: whether in an architectural or planning office, in the construction industry, or in state or municipal construction administration. With a study structure that is open in terms of content, students are offered the greatest freedom to shape their studies according to their own professional interests. Specializations in the fields of architecture are just as possible as a generalist education.

The focus of the course is on design. With the classical design tasks as well as the special formats Experimental Design, Artistic Work and Theoretical Work, you will be offered a wide range of options. You will learn to recognize, analyze and evaluate structural-spatial problems against the background of political, social, economic, cultural and historical contexts and to develop adequate architectural solutions on this basis.

With opportunities to focus your studies on deepening theoretical knowledge, you will be shown and paved the way for scientific work and doctoral studies.

How to apply

Graduates are able to critically reflect on the designed, built and lived environment, to develop it creatively and constructively, and to design their own work on the basis of specialist knowledge and skills. They are able to implement their ideas in form, shape, function, material and construction with professional confidence and explain them convincingly in terms of argumentation. They are able to carry out comprehensive activities independently and on their own responsibility:

Creating architectural concepts, studies and designs using critical analysis and artistic-creative techniques.
Integrating all relevant design, functional, social, environmental, technical, economic and legal concerns in the planning and realization of the built environment
Coordination, guidance, control of planning and execution of a project
Consultation as well as support and representation of the client in all matters related to the planning and execution of a building project

Due to their ability to think beyond existing boundaries, to initiate innovations and to find creative solutions for future problems in building, graduates are flexible in their deployment. They are able to actively and responsibly design living spaces and implement their designs, concepts and studies in a responsible position in an architectural or planning office. They are qualified for management positions in the building industry, in state and municipal building administration or elsewhere, as well as for work in research and development. With a previous bachelor's degree in architecture and a two-year practical phase following the master's program in accordance with the requirements of the architectural chambers as well as EU regulations, they have acquired the qualification for professional qualification and licensing as an architect in Germany (chamber eligibility) and for worldwide recognition in accordance with the UNESCO/UIA Validation System for Architectural Education.

In accordance with the objectives, design projects form the central building block in each semester. In in-depth courses and seminars, you can use existing knowledge from the bachelor's degree program in turn in areas of competence

extend and complement. Knowledge and skills are taught in lectures, seminars, field trips and field research. In this respect, a teaching and learning program is provided that varies from semester to semester.

Architects bear a particular social responsibility for the design of the built environment, including the aesthetic, atmospheric, functional, economic and ecological implications. Within their university studies, they learn and develop the necessary knowledge, creativity, energy, cooperation and responsibility for this range of tasks.

In the bachelor's degree programs in architecture and architecture+ and the master's degree program in architecture, the well-known and recognized profile of the Braunschweig School is taken up and further developed. The focus is on teaching design competence. This includes the intellectual skills of critical analysis, evaluation and comparison as well as the fundamental ability to engage in artistic and creative debate.

Like all undergraduate programs at the TU Braunschweig, the Bachelor's programs are designed to lead to a university Bachelor's degree. The acquired skills are relevant for the labor market, so that employability is achieved. However, the acquired knowledge and skills are not sufficient for an unrestricted independent activity in architecture and planning offices or other professional fields. For this purpose, further qualification is necessary, which can be achieved within the framework of a consecutive master's degree program.

Qualification goals of the master's degree program in architecture

The master's program in architecture is designed to enable specializations in the fields of architecture as well as a more advanced generalist education.

The focus of the master's program in architecture is design. A wide range of technical and methodological competencies in architectural and urban planning design are acquired in semester drafts and projects, the master's thesis (with appropriate thematic orientation) and in short-term drafts (compact and standing drafts). By combining these formats with seminars and design-related in-depth studies, students are enabled to address architectural issues in a professionally versed and scientifically sound manner. Graduates are thus able to recognize, analyze and evaluate structural-spatial problems against the background of political, social, economic, cultural and historical contexts and, on this basis, develop equally adequate, creative, innovative and sustainable solutions. They are able to responsibly apply their skills in all professional fields of architecture, whether in architectural or planning offices, in the construction industry, in public administrations or cultural institutions. They are equally qualified for scientific work and doctoral studies.
