ViFaPi aims to apply and test innovative automatic image processing methods to such historical sources, including the digitized book holdings from the Pharmacy Collection of the TU Braunschweig, illustrations from other books with many plant images and herbaria of the cooperation partner Herzog August Bibliothek (HAB).
The automatic recognition of plants, their parts and approaches based on this for classification and similarity searches (e.g. search for similar leaves, flowers, colors or contexts) have the potential to create considerable added value, especially for historical collections. Locations are also to be recorded for a sub-collection so that the flora of Lower Saxony and its representation in printed works can be shown.
