The next Kinder-Uni lecture will take place in autumn 2024. Registrations will be possible after the summer holidays. Further information will be available on these websites starting in June.
The Kinder-Uni with the focus theme "Zero Waste" consisted of three parts:
For the first time, we collaborated with the City of Braunschweig (Department of Education), the Grund- und Hauptschule Pestalozzistraße, and the Haus der Wissenschaft GmbH.
The focus theme "Zero Waste" related to the Sustainability Award for Braunschweig schools, and our Kinder-Uni program with explanatory videos, podcast series, and a grand closing lecture is geared towards that.
The Kinder-Uni Braunschweig is supported by the Ecki-Wohlgehagen Foundation and the Braunschweig Citizens' Foundation. Many thanks!
Prof. Dr. Stephan Scholl | Institute of Chemical and Thermal Process Engineering
Lecture Content:
Plastic waste is one of the biggest environmental problems of the present: it dirties roadside areas, ends up as microplastics in oceans, and is predominantly incinerated today. As a vast and readily available source of raw materials, they could replace petroleum and natural gas in many applications.
In the lecture, we will therefore address the following questions: What recycling options are available for plastics today? Are all plastics equally recyclable? What would need to be done to recycle more plastics? And what can be made from recycled plastics?
For parents and accompanying persons, the lecture was broadcast to a neighboring lecture hall!
The accompanying podcast series on the topic of "Zero Waste" titled "Clever Nachgefragt!" was created in cooperation with the Grund- und Hauptschule Pestalozzistraße and the Haus der Wissenschaft Braunschweig.
Here's the first episode of the podcast
Description: We all produce waste in our daily lives, whether it's organic waste, residual waste, or packaging. But did people also produce waste in the past? Franziska Neumann is a junior professor at the Institute of History at TU Braunschweig. She takes us back to the early modern period and answers fascinating questions about waste in the past.
Featuring Lena and Mia, students from the Pestalozzistraße Grund und Hauptschule, and Prof. Dr. Franziska Neumann, Institute of History, TU Braunschweig.

Here's the second episode of the podcast.
As a material, plastic is very light, durable, and inexpensive. Many things we use in our daily lives are made of plastic. Packaging for food, shopping bags, clothing, toys, and much more. Professor Stephan Scholl explains to us why so many things are made of plastic and what exactly the difference is between recycling and reuse. He works at TU Braunschweig at the Institute of Chemical and Thermal Process Engineering.
Featuring Jolina and John, students from the Pestalozzistraße Grund und Hauptschule, and Prof. Dr. Stephan Scholl, Institute of Chemical and Thermal Process Engineering.

Here is the third episode of the podcast
Description: Have you ever thought about how great it would be if waste didn't even exist? If the leftovers that accumulate at home could be used for something else? Using coffee grounds to fertilize flowers or crafting a pencil holder from an old tin can are great ways to prevent waste from occurring in the first place. Katja Knecht is a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute for Sustainable Urbanism at the TU Braunschweig. She focuses on sustainable urban planning and explains how waste can be further used and recycled in cities.
With Avishi, Collin, Adrian, and Emmi, students of the Grund und Hauptschule Pestalozzistraße, and Dr. Katja Knecht, Institute for Sustainable Urbanism.

Here is the fourth episode of the podcast
Description: Wastewater is generated daily when we wash our hands, take showers, or use the toilet. Few people are aware that wastewater is also a form of waste. Thomas Dockhorn is a professor at the Institute for Urban Water Management at the TU Braunschweig. He explains how our wastewater is cleaned in sewage treatment plants, that bacteria are not always bad, and what microplastics actually are.
With Kimberly and Sechin, students of the Grund- und Hauptschule Pestalozzistraße, and Prof. Dr. Thomas Dockhorn, Institute for Urban Water Management.

Here is the fifth episode of the podcast
Description: Each of us has our own idea of what a factory looks like. Often, we think of large machines in a hall producing something. But have you ever noticed that factories are rarely located in cities? Dr. Kolja Meyer, Head of the Junior Research Group "Urban Flows and Production" at TU Braunschweig, explains why this is and what factories can look like in this episode. He also tells us what he likes to do in his spare time.
With Karlotta, Greta, Bana, and Levi, students of the Grund- und Hauptschule Pestalozzistraße, and Dr. Kolja Meyer, Institute of Machine Tools and Production Engineering.

Here is the sixth episode of the podcast
We all want to live more sustainably and have different approaches to dealing with waste in everyday life. With Professor Manfred Krafczyk, we discuss what the term "sustainability" actually means. He is Vice President for Digitalization and Sustainability at TU Braunschweig and explains how schools can also become more sustainable.
With Max, Ebrima, Kinisha, and Noa, students of the Grund- und Hauptschule Pestalozzistraße, and Prof. Dr. Manfred Krafczyk, Vice President for Digitalization and Sustainability at TU Braunschweig.

In 17 explanation videos, as part of the Kinder-Uni 2022/23, we explained what sustainability actually means. Over three days, the topics of ecological, social, and economic sustainability were vividly explained for children aged 8 to 12, as well as older individuals and adults. A special explanation video was published for each goal.
So what are the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) exactly? These are 17 goals set by the United Nations. These 17 goals for ecologically, socially, and economically sustainable development are to be achieved by 2030.
2030... that's not so far away! That's why TU Braunschweig also aims to prioritize ecological, social, and economic sustainability in line with the SDGs. But what does all of this mean exactly? You can find out in the explanation videos, each lasting 30 seconds.
If you want to know more, you can also visit the website 17ziele.de.
Just click on the image to the left and you'll learn all about the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.
Click on the individual images of each goal to access the videos. Enjoy clicking through!
