Who are you and what is your research topic?
We are Michael Guschakowski and Thorben Lenk from the Institute of Environmental and Sustainable Chemistry at the TU Braunschweig. We investigate the electrochemical synthesis of regenerative fuels. Substances of biological origin are converted into fuels, using renewable electricity.
Which research question are you working on?
Specifically, our aim is to find new opportunities for the electrochemical production of fuels. We want to produce these fuels with the least possible expenditure of energy and material in a way that allows us to obtain the highest possible amounts of the fuel. Other substances should be produced in small proportions to increase the efficiency of the reaction. We also want to know what happens at the molecular level on the surface during these reactions in order to gain a better understanding of the processes.
What inspires you about your research?
Exciting insights into processes at the smallest level, the proximity of a specific application and the relevance for the future of aviation and humanity.
Why is your topic relevant for future aviation?
Aviation not only plays a major role for our vacations, but also ensures contact and understanding between the different cultures of the world. With the help of fuels based on renewable raw materials, it is possible to maintain this contact in a climate-neutral manner. The topic therefore is an important contribution to make aviation more environmentally friendly and sustainable in the future.
What is special about participating in the interdisciplinary research network SE²A?
The chance to be part of a bigger project that is of huge importance for modern society and gives the opportunity to do something good for the future. Furthermore it provides the possibility to work in an international and multidisciplinary context. You get to know people from all over the world and from different parts of Germany and learn something about different cultures and scientific disciplines.
