The Institute of Pharmaceutical Technology and Biopharmaceutics at the University of Braunschweig attends to a broad field of research activities within its academic duties.
Our fundamental research contains primarily the physical and chemical characterisation of colloidal micro particles. In addition both crystallisation behavior of emulsifiers, characterisation of their framework and their stabilisation in semi solid formulations like ointments are of particular importance.
Apart from that emphasis is placed on the development of detergent free emulsions with sufficent stability and analysis of the influence exerted by drugs on the system's colloidal structure.
Based on the results of the physical and chemical analysis the drugs' liberation, dissolution and permeation through biological membranes is examined with regard to their micro structure. The influence of the colloidal particles and the whole formulation on biological tissue is characterised by different means. For these purposes both excised tissue of animal orn human origin and organotypic skin or cornea constructs cultivated at our institute are used. Our examinations also aim at the development of new controlled release drug delivery systems for dermal, rectal and ocular use.
