Our goal at the TU Braunschweig University Sports Center is to make all students and university members feel welcome and valued. The sports culture should enable equal opportunities - regardless of gender, age, sexual orientation, ideology, disability or chronic illness, ethnic and social background as well as different backgrounds and life situations.
We are convinced that sport and its structures have great inclusive potential: unifying experiences in sport and play, learning to work together, respect and fairness as well as overcoming common hurdles and boundaries - be they personal, social or cultural. At the same time, we know that sport is not automatically inclusive, as it is full of norms and ideals and is therefore not protected from exclusion and potential experiences of exclusion. Be it the emphasis on performance, even in recreational sport, be it certain physical ideals, be it the separation of sport for people with and without disabilities, be it the binary gender or language barriers, etc., we know that sport is not automatically inclusive.
For us, developing this potential means specifically promoting diversity and inclusion in our structures and services. It means systematically creating access and breaking down barriers, creating the necessary safer spaces and providing targeted impetus. At the same time, it means taking a critical look at existing structures and disadvantages. All with the goal of inclusive organizational development of university sports.
