Engagement formats in urban development enable residents, local businesses, experts and social organisations to actively participate in the planning process. Often overlooked by planners, the local knowledge these groups possess can thus be uncovered and harnessed for development. Participation promotes the inclusion and transparency of the planning process, where decisions affecting the immediate neighbourhood are made jointly – allowing to identify and address potential problems, concerns, wishes and demands in urban development at an early stage of the planning processes.
The SQ is embedded in the project Co-Adapted Braunschweig (COABS), which aims to do exactly that: to network administration, research and urban society in order to jointly identify and develop climate adaptation strategies and measures in the scope of co-creative processes.
In the seminar, we will first jointly analyse the culture of participation: a library of public participation formats will be compiled and evaluated to identify effective methods. In targeted workshops we will then develop suitable methods and formats that help to encourage citizens to contribute their needs, wishes and local expertise on climate impacts and possible adaptation strategies.
The formats will be specifically geared towards implementation in the cope of the COABS Festival, which will take place in the Weststadt on 20 and 21 September 2024. However, a test run will already take place during the ISU Summer Finals on 9 July 2024. The aim is to use the methods to actively incorporate the citizens of the Weststadt and ultimately the whole of Braunschweig in the development of the climate adaptation strategy for Braunschweig and to thus proactively shape the future of their city.
