Cities must become more sustainable. This is because their inhabitants are also the biggest consumers of resources, but are also the most affected by the consequences of climate change. Accordingly, cities in the "urban age" harbour great potential to be the driving forces behind sustainable transformations. Under the vision of the "net-Zero", Singapore is taking on a global pioneering role - also in terms of sustainable urban development. In order to achieve the set goal of climate neutrality by 2050, enormous efforts are being made in all sectors - especially in the areas of mobility, energy supply, (food) production and construction. At the same time, the quality of life in the city is to be improved and dependence on imports reduced through a circular economy. The use of water as a resource plays a special role in this.
The seminar examines strategies, implemented solutions and realised projects in Singapore under the formulated sustainability goals. A pool of ideas, projects and materials "learning from Singapore" will be compiled, analysed and examined for transferability to Germany. In the course of a planned excursion, urban and transport planning, urban development and architectural projects will be visited. We want to discuss the holistic and interdisciplinary planning principles for the sustainable development of Singapore with relevant actors from national planning authorities (e.g. Urban Redevelopment Authority or Building and Construction Authority) and visit protagonists from architecture and engineering firms.
The seminar will provide an insight into innovative, global solutions for sustainable urban development to one of the most pressing issues facing urban planners, architects, transport planners, etc: Urbanisation in the face of climate change and the scarcity of resources.
